The Power of Words

People all over the world with disabilities live a life of oppression. The video “The Power of Words” uses the symbol of blindness to represent these people living in oppression. The video is about a blind man who sits on the sidewalk with a sign bluntly asking for help. In the video it shows the man sitting on the edge of a busy sidewalk with his sign bluntly stating “I’m blind Please help.” Very few people who pass by would throw him some change to help. Then a lady walks by but turns around and wrights a new sign for him. Then almost every person walking by would give him change and help him. When the lady returns the symbol of blindness is exemplified when the man has to ask her what she had done to his sign. The symbol of blindness is used here because he cannot see the changes that help him in his life. People with sight can see the difference changes make in their lives. The man’s blindness oppresses him to the point where he needs help just to understand the change that was made in his situation.
